I Dream of Jeannie was the popular NBC show that ran from 1965 to 1970. It was produced in reaction to the success of Bewitched on ABC. The first season was produced in black and white, while the other 4 were produced in full color.
I Dream of Jeannie featured only a few main characters throughout its run. Jeannie was found by Tony when his rocket launch failed and he crash landed on an island. On that island, he found Jeannie inside her bottle. He freed her from a 2,000 year imprisonment and in return, she summoned a helicopter to rescue him. Tony felt indebted to her and decided to pay her back by freeing her and inviting her to live with him. Roger was Tony's partner at NASA, but he mainly served as a witness to Jeannie's actions. Figuring out ways to convince Roger that it didn't happen occupied significant portions of the show. The rest of Jeannie's family also made appearances from time to time to provide for additional stories.
I Dream of Jeannie had a successful run, and it went out with a bang in 1970. The show continued to please the next generation as it existed in syndication for many years after its cancellation. It was a true slice of Americana that has forever earned a place in our hearts.
